UNCONVENTIONAL CLINICIAN

Illuminating overlooked drivers of complex

symptoms - and helping people navigate

systems that weren’t built for complexity.

INTEGRATIVE SUPPORT FOR COMPLEX NEEDS

About Unconventional Clinician

Unconventional Clinician is a consulting, education, care coordination, and advocacy platform founded by Nikki Hammonds, LCSW. I am a clinician and care manager with over 20 years of experience across behavioral health and healthcare systems--and a mother of children with complex medical histories (shared more fully on the Why This Work Exists page).

That lived experience became the catalyst for this work. Unconventional Clinician exists to support others navigating complexity--to help families, professionals, and systems pause, widen the lens, and consider what may be overlooked when care becomes siloed or symptoms are treated without context. It is grounded in ethics, humility, and hope for meaningful forward movement.

My Approach to Complexity

Unconventional Clinician translates emerging research, observed clinical patterns, and systems-level insight into clear, ethical, non-clinical support for people navigating complexity--especially when traditional models fall short.

This work is grounded in a whole-health, systems-aware lens that considers:

  • Mental and emotional health
  • Biological and physiological contributors
  • Environmental and contextual factors
  • Lived experience and family systems
  • Policy and structural barriers

The goal is not to replace medical or mental health care--but to expand understanding, continue asking better questions, and help identify overlooked contributors, so that people might have a better quality of life.

SERVICES AT A GLANCE

An important distinction--this website describes various types of services offered under different professional roles and frameworks.

  1. Clinical Services (Psychotherapy, LCSWA Supervision)
  2. Non-Clinical Services (Consulting, Education, Advisory/Care Coordination, Advocacy, etc...)

Because clinical and non-clinical offerings serve different purposes, they are offered separately, under different ethical and legal standards.

If you’re unsure which service fits your needs, the service pages can help guide you--or you’re welcome to reach out with questions.

Psychotherapy (Clinical Services)

Clinical psychotherapy is appropriate for individuals or families seeking treatment for mental health symptoms or emotional distress.

Clinical services:

  • Are provided by Nikki Hammonds, Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • Follow clinical, ethical, and legal standards
  • Are delivered via scheduled virtual therapy sessions
  • May be insurance-covered
  • Are subject to North Carolina licensure laws, HIPAA, and informed consent requirements

Consulting, Advisory & Advocacy (Non-Clinical)

Consulting and advisory services are designed for complex, cross-disciplinary challenges that fall outside psychotherapy or medical care. These non-clinical services are available throughout the United States and internationally.

Non-clinical services:

  • Are provided by Unconventional Clinician, LLC
  • Are educational, consultative, and systems-focused
  • Are not psychotherapy or medical treatment
  • Are cash-pay only and not insurance-billable
  • Do not establish a therapist–client relationship

A Personal Note

As a military spouse and parent of children impacted by medically complex neuroimmune conditions, I’ve experienced firsthand how families are often dismissed when symptoms don’t align with conventional frameworks.

That lived experience shapes everything I do--from individual clinical work to systems-level consulting and advocacy. It’s why I approach complexity with humility, curiosity, and a commitment to care that doesn’t stop at surface explanations.

People deserve to be heard, believed, and supported--especially when answers aren’t simple.
